‎Wellingara-based concerned youth, Lamin Senghore, has publicly expressed strong political opinion ahead of Gambia’s 2026 presidential election, urging citizens to reject both the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) for being divisive and ethnocentric, throwing support behind the UNITE Movement for led by Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda.

‎‎Senghore’s comments came amidst the increasing political tension and heightened public debate as political parties and movements position themselves ahead of the most anticipated 2026 elections.

‎‎In a lengthy statement shared with CP on Monday, he described UNITE as a “new wind of change” in Gambian politics, praising its leadership style, youth participation, and gender representation during the movement’s recently concluded national congress and mega rally held at a local hotel, and Buffer Zone on Saturday.

‎‎”A congress where positions holders were dominated by the backbone of every nation, the youths. A congress where positions were almost shared equally amongst the two genders. A congress where position holders are mostly in their 30s and 40s respectively. That’s clearly a new trend in history of Gambian politics,” Lamin stated in his opinion piece.

‎‎He praised Bensouda, portraying him as a visionary and unifying leader who is capable of steering the affairs of The Gambia toward progressive reforms.‎‎

With seven months to presidential election, opposition political parties, movements, and the ruling establishment is expected to intensify, with UNITE yet to know the fate of their registration application which is currently before the independent electoral commission.‎
