From the vibrant football streets of Old Primat in Banjul to commanding midfielders in Gambia’s top tier, Omar Sonko, alias the Banjul General, is steadily crafting a name for himself as one of the most exciting midfielders to follow in Gambian football.
Currently anchoring the midfield for the Gambia Ports Authority, the young star has grown into a commanding presence whose performances, since last season, continue to attract attentions across the league.
His journey began at the grassroots level with Juventus FC, Banjul, where he first showcased his competitive spirit by helping the team finish as the Nawettan runners-up. Sonko’s performance soon earned him a move to the lions of Banjul, stepping into organized league football in the Second Division and began sharpening the tactical side of his game.At Waa Banjul, his rise continued.
He broke into the starting lineup through consistent and hardworking displays, and it was at Waa Banjul that he developed into a reliable midfield engine, proving his ability to compete at the highest domestic level.
What truly sets Sonko apart is his relentless engine. A true box-to-box midfielder, he covers every blade of grass, breaking up opposition attacks while driving his team forward with purpose and determination Last season marked another important chapter when he joined Gambia Ports Authority in the Second Division.
Operating both as a defensive midfielder and a box-to-box presence, Sonko became one of the team’s most dependable players, featuring in nearly every match and playing a crucial role in the club’s triumphant campaign that secured promotion as champions of the 2024/25 season.
Gambia Ports Authority sits at the top of the table after the first round. Omar has featured in 13 out of 15 games this season, delivering stellar performances with multiple Man of the Match awards along the way.
