A man accused of fatally stabbing former University of The Gambia Students’ Union (UTGSU) Vice President, Yunusa Mbye, Momdou Bah has been formally charged with murder and remanded in custody pending trial before the High Court.
Jallow, popularly known as “Area,” appeared before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday in connection with Mbye’s death following a stabbing incident in Fajara.
According to the charge sheet, he is facing one count of murder contrary to Section 155 of the Criminal Offences Act 2025 of the Republic of The Gambia.
Prosecutors allege that on 15 June 2026, in Fajara, Kanifing Municipality, Jallow stabbed Yunusa Mbye in the neck with a bottle, causing injuries that later proved fatal.
The accused was arraigned before Magistrate Sallah Mbaye of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court. However, the court ruled that it lacked jurisdiction to hear and determine the matter, as murder is an indictable offence that falls within the jurisdiction of the High Court.
Consequently, Magistrate Mbaye ordered that Jallow be remanded at Mile 2 Central Prison and directed that the case be transferred to the High Court for prosecution.
The death of Yunusa Mbye has attracted public attention, with friends and concerned citizens awaiting for further developments as the case proceeds through the judicial system.
Until his death, Yunusa Mbaye was serving as a graduate assistant at the University of The Gambia.
The High Court is expected to take over the matter in the coming weeks.
