Holding their nerve in a penalty shootout, LC Rising Stars were on Saturday crowned champions of the Wellingara Sports Committee 2026 League Tournament after defeating Miami FC by 6-5 following a goalless draw in a fiercely contested final.
The championship clash lived up to expectations, with both teams producing a disciplined and competitive performance, particularly in a tense first half where neither side managed to assert complete control.
Just 5 minutes into the first half, Miami FC made a first meaningful target when Alieu Jobe unleashed a shot from outside the 18-yard area but the ball went over the crossbar.
Again, 33rd minutes into the game Miami’s combative midfielder, Yusupha Manneh, surged through the middle, beating two opponents before being dispossessed by LC’s center back, Muhammed Jallow.
Moments later, wing wizard, Muhammed Fofana, showcased his pace with a brilliant run that earned him a one-on-one opportunity but his final touch was too weak, allowing the goalkeeper to comfortably gather the ball.
The highly physical contest saw referee dish out yellow cards to Miami FC’s Yusupha Manneh, and LC’s Pa Malick Mboob, Alagie Colley and Habibou Jadama for heavy challenges.
The complexion of the game changed shortly after the break when Miami’s coach Ismaila Ceesay substituted his captain, Yusupha Manneh, seemingly avoiding a risk of a second booking after two successive tackles while already on a yellow card. His departure allowed LC Rising Stars to dominate the midfield for much of the second half, although they were unable to convert their superiority into a goal.
Despite both sides pushing for a winner, the final whistle ended the match at 0-0, sending the contest to a penalty shootout.
LC Rising Stars held their composure from the spot, converting 6 penalties to Miami FC’s 5 to seal a memorable victory and claim the Wellingara Sports Committee 2026 Nawettan Tournament trophy.
