The ongoing coalition mediation talks involving opposition political parties and movements have reached a significant milestone after delegates agreed to adopt a candidate-led model aimed at fielding a single unity candidate for the December 2026 presidential elections.
The decision was reached during the coalition’s ninth strategic session held on Saturday, June 20, at the African Princess Hotel in Kololi.According to a statement issued by its secretariat following the recent meeting, representatives of seven registered opposition political parties and ten political movements attended the session, which forms part of ongoing efforts to build consensus and strengthen opposition cooperation ahead of the national polls.
The meeting was hosted by the United Movement for Change (UMC), led by Talib Ahmed Bensouda, who welcomed delegates and reaffirmed the importance of dialogue and collaboration among opposition stakeholders.The coalition mediation talks, which are held on a rotational basis and hosted by participating parties, serve as a platform for opposition groups to coordinate strategy and explore pathways toward presenting a united front in the upcoming elections.
Delegates have signed several key governance documents, including the Coalition’s Terms of Reference, a Confidentiality Code, and a Code of Conduct for the General Assembly, which are expected to guide the coalition’s operations and ensure discipline and trust among participating members.
The discussions focused on strengthening unity among opposition actors and establishing a framework that would support the emergence of a single candidate to challenge in the December 2026 elections.The participants, at the conclusion of the meeting, had agreed that the next session of the coalition mediation talks will be hosted by the Citizens’ Coalition for Change at the Baobab Hotel.
The latest development is seen as a notable step in ongoing efforts by opposition groups to consolidate support and increase their chances of presenting a united challenge in the country’s next presidential elections scheduled for December 5th 2026.
