The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) has acknowledged allegations circulating on social media against former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General (Rtd) Mamat O.A. Cham, made by his former Personal Assistant, Ex-Sergeant Saine Modou, while emphasizing that no substantive evidence has yet been established in relation to the claims.
According to a statement released by the military, the allegations, which have gained significant attention online, contributed to Lieutenant General Cham’s resignation from his position as CDS. However, the GAF stressed that the matter remains under investigation and that conclusions should not be drawn prematurely.
The military institution highlighted its longstanding reputation for professionalism, discipline, and commitment to constitutional governance, noting that it has consistently enjoyed the trust and confidence of the Gambian public. The statement referenced independent public perception surveys, including findings by the Centre for Policy Research and Strategic Studies (CEPRASS), which identified the GAF as one of the country’s most trusted public and security institutions.
In response to the seriousness of the allegations and in an effort to preserve public confidence while ensuring accountability, President Adama Barrow, who serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Gambia Armed Forces, has directed the establishment of an independent Board of Inquiry (BOI). The board has been tasked with conducting a thorough, impartial, and comprehensive investigation into the matter.
The GAF stated that it will not prejudge the outcome of the inquiry and will allow the BOI to carry out its mandate without interference. Military authorities reiterated their commitment to established ethical standards, administrative procedures, and codes of conduct that apply to all personnel regardless of rank or position.
The statement further noted that the GAF High Command continues to perform its responsibilities in accordance with military principles of discipline, professionalism, accountability, and decorum. It emphasized that the allegations have not affected operational effectiveness, command cohesion, or the routine functioning of the armed forces.
While awaiting the findings and recommendations of the Board of Inquiry, the GAF called on members of the public to exercise restraint and allow due process to take its course. The institution reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the armed forces, protecting the welfare of its personnel, and fulfilling its constitutional mandate in service of the nation.
The outcome of the Board of Inquiry is expected to provide clarity on the allegations and determine any further actions that may be required.
